The Prayer of Jonah

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. 2 He said:
“In my distress I called to the LORD,
and he answered me.

From the depths of the grave [a] I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.

3 You hurled me into the deep,
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
swept over me.

4 I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’

5 The engulfing waters threatened me, [b]
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you brought my life up from the pit,
O LORD my God.

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, LORD,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.

8 “Those who cling to worthless idols
forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
Salvation comes from the LORD.”

10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah 2:1-10

A Prayer For the Thirsty

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
when I remember you upon my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
For you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.”

–Psalm 63: 1-8

I hope this will be our prayer this week.

Get Involved With the Prayer Page

Praying with and for each other as a community is one of the main focuses of sweepusaway.com.  This page will serve as a place where we encourage you to come and read the comments every day that you check out the site.  The goal is for those who have a prayer request, praise, or even a question or comment concerning prayer, that it would be posted in the comments.  That way, we all can be praying for each other continually and through this I believe we will truly see God move. Sweepusaway.com will periodically put some requests as a post on the home page but utilizing the prayer page is very important.  Also, if  there is a confidential prayer, do not hesitate to send your request, etc via email to sweepusaway@yahoo.com . We would love to hear from you! Below is a standard that sweepusaway.com uses for prayer, let is not be a rulebook but an encouragement as we fall to our knees before our powerful Creator!

Method of Prayer:

1) Do not be afraid to spend time in humility, meditation, and silence as you begin this sacred time with the Lord.  Several times we focus too much on the words to say but refuse to listen.

2) Lift up the Name of the Lord.  The entire purpose of God’s being is to bring glory to Himself.  He enjoys it and requires it.  Tell God how great He is, I promise He won’t mind =)  Even Christ, when modeling how to pray, gives God his due glory to begin (Matthew 6:10-14).

3) Thank the Lord for being truly blessed.  Often times we, as Christians, get down and tend to pray for all of the hardships that we are facing.  Yet, we underestimate how truly blessed that we really are.  Tell God how thankful you are for everything He has allowed you to enjoy.  Even thank Him for the small things, He is your Heavenly Father and smiles upon your gratitude.

4) Pray for the lost and the struggling.  Earth is in a constant battle for souls. One of the most important commandments in the Bible is the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).  We should long to see the lost be found and the staggering to be rescued.  Take this time to pray for those in need spiritually.

5) Finally, pray for your needs.  We save this for last not because your needs are not important but because silence, lifting up God’s name, thankfulness, anguish for the lost, and prayers for the suffering allow your heart to be in the right place to pray for the needs of yourself, friends, and family.  Also, the Lord’s nature is humility and putting others first (Phil. 2) We at sweepusaway.com hope and pray that this method might help you in your prayer walk with the Lord. We pray that God acts and shakes our lives through this interactive time of crying out to Him. Amen.

Discovering Penn State

Anthony is traveling to Penn State this weekend to try to learn and become more involved in the knowledge of ministry situation there.  He will meet with several different ministry leaders and try to learn as much as possible about what the Lord has already stirred up in the heart and pulse of the Penn State campus. Pray that God would intervene and provide divine meetings, opportunities, and knowledge. This is an exciting time as the Lord continues to work and provide. Penn State is a university with an extreme need for the gospel and our prayer is that it is done the right way and in the right time. God’s way and God’s time. Amen.
