For the Sake of Others

1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:1-4

As we continue to look at this idea of love and Christian community, we must keep in mind that it is going to take sacrifice. We all have our own sets of wants and needs, yet are we willing to lay those down in humility for the sake of others?

Humility vs. Pride: Grace or Opposition?

Generally whenever the writers of the New Testament quote the Old Testament, it is time to pay attention. However, when they do it TWICE then we really need to take notice:

“Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  — James 4:5-7(ESV)

And again:

“Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”  — 1 Peter 5:5-7 (ESV)

Both of these writers are quoting the Greek text of Prov. 3:34 and it seems like they are trying to say God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble! So which one will you choose: your own Pride, and therefore being directly opposed by the Living God; or humility and therefore receiving the loving grace and mercy of our God who cares for us?

What is the Ultimate Measure of Man

Here is a quote I found from Martin Luther King Jr. on the measure of a man. I was very humbled by it as sometimes we focus so much on obtaining and striving towards success and comfort, yet walking in the name of Christ points in a different direction. How do we respond and push onwards when trials and sufferings occur?

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

What the LORD Requires

6 With what shall I come before the LORD
and bow down before the exalted God?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?

7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8 He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

-Micah 6:6-8

The Humility of Christ

“5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!”

– Philippians 2:5-8
