A Prayer for the Lonely

Recently, life has had its full share of ups and downs. Some very exciting developments for the future have come to fruition.  Yet, many frustrations with the job search and being alone most days while Laura is at work have weighed heavily on my heart.  Today, I was reading through Psalm 25 and found some verses that were both encouraging and convicting. I can only hope that these verses might inspire you as well. Amen.

 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
   for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart have multiplied;
   free me from my anguish.
18 Look upon my affliction and my distress
   and take away all my sins.
19 See how my enemies have increased
   and how fiercely they hate me!
20 Guard my life and rescue me;
   let me not be put to shame,
   for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness protect me,
   because my hope is in you.

Psalm 25:16-21

A Thought and Observation from C.S. Lewis

“If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” -C.S. Lewis

What do we desire in life? What defines ultimate joy, happiness, contentment, peace, etc?  For me, I do find myself striving, pushing, pulling, and longing for true satisfaction through what this world has for me.

“17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:17-21

I just want to encourage you not to be discouraged by what this world cannot offer.  Remember that when we find our identity through Christ is the moment that we find true joy and contentment.  Therefore, live in this world today, not trying to make it by earthly standards, rather,  trying to live as though your priorities and mindset lie with Christ in Heaven. Amen.

Grasping the Spirit

What does the Spirit do? His works are ineffable in majesty, and innumerable in quanity. how can we even ponder what extends beyond the ages? What did He do before creation began? How great are the graces He showered on creation? What power will he wield in the age to come? He existed; He pre-existed; He co-existed with the Father and the Son before the ages.  Even if you can imagine anything beyond the ages, you will discover that the Spirit is even further beyond.

-St. Basil the Great

Amen.

Christ is Our Refuge

As we face a dark and lost world, remember that God is our refuge.

Dr. James W. Mohler of Trinity International University states:

“Our world can be a stressful place.  As Christians, we are called to engage our culture, to live as salt and light in our world.  The inherent stress that we encounter is particularly challenging when we are learning about ourselves, who we are, how our faith works, and how we will personally engage our culture.  Yet, God has provided us a refuge in Himself, and in His Son Jesus Christ.”

What is the Ultimate Measure of Man

Here is a quote I found from Martin Luther King Jr. on the measure of a man. I was very humbled by it as sometimes we focus so much on obtaining and striving towards success and comfort, yet walking in the name of Christ points in a different direction. How do we respond and push onwards when trials and sufferings occur?

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Conflicting Standards

What does it mean to live up to the following standard? When does one’s faith and obedience actually lead to discord with the world and a connection to the Father? The current Christian assimilation with the world is something not to take lightly.

“To be right with God has often meant to be in trouble with men.”
