A Prayer for the Lonely

Recently, life has had its full share of ups and downs. Some very exciting developments for the future have come to fruition.  Yet, many frustrations with the job search and being alone most days while Laura is at work have weighed heavily on my heart.  Today, I was reading through Psalm 25 and found some verses that were both encouraging and convicting. I can only hope that these verses might inspire you as well. Amen.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart have multiplied;
   free me from my anguish.
18 Look upon my affliction and my distress
and take away all my sins.
19 See how my enemies have increased
and how fiercely they hate me!
20 Guard my life and rescue me;
let me not be put to shame,
for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness protect me,
because my hope is in you.

Psalm 25:16-21

A Thought and Observation from C.S. Lewis

“If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” -C.S. Lewis

What do we desire in life? What defines ultimate joy, happiness, contentment, peace, etc?  For me, I do find myself striving, pushing, pulling, and longing for true satisfaction through what this world has for me.

“17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:17-21

I just want to encourage you not to be discouraged by what this world cannot offer.  Remember that when we find our identity through Christ is the moment that we find true joy and contentment.  Therefore, live in this world today, not trying to make it by earthly standards, rather,  trying to live as though your priorities and mindset lie with Christ in Heaven. Amen.

When I Stop Being God, and Let God Be God

The recent onslaught of irresolution in my life has ever increased and caused consternation in about every area of my daily existence on this earth.  It seems so petty, trivial, and mainstream sometimes when I consider the sources of my panic and uncertainty.  Currently, the life of being done with school has brought more stress than staying up all night writing papers on the different theologies of Scripture or the history of the Catholic Church.

Finding a job with the ever-glowing Biblical Studies Bachelor’s Degree almost seems comical at times.  Being qualified for any career job outside of ministry comes across as asinine.  Yet, most ministry jobs require someone older with a Seminary or Masters’ Degree.  Oh, the life of the poor. With no money or desire for Graduate School right now, I find it easy to become discouraged and alone.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

23Jesus said to him, `You say, “If you can.” Anything can be done for the person who believes.’  Mark 9:23

3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

I see and know these promises and facts found in Scripture concerning the nature of God and the characteristics and definitions of my relationship and interaction with Him.  Yet, somewhere in the boorish thoughts and tendecies of my life, I long to fight this battle alone.  At what point is all of my Biblical studies and Scripture memory done in vain?  Do I truly believe what the living and breathing Word of God in the Bible proclaims?  I feel as if my faith is worn on the outside with all the glitter and pretty lights.  Yet, when tested is lacking a pulse at all.  Without a faith that is active, even my successes in life with bring no lasting satisfaction and joy will be the goal that ever eludes my longing grasp.

So my prayer for myself during this trial and for all of you (as I understand, even through the blinders of my pride, that I am not the only one with trials in life) is as follows:

Dear God, You are so good. You are the same from the beginning, today, and forever.  The same God who created man with your own breath and in your image.  Lord, may we not be a church that compulsively reads and proclaims your name out of obligation or some self-righteous necessity.  Lord, may we truly believe that you are Truth. And Love. And that we would find our rest and security in these things.  Lord that we would approach any progression we make in life through the filter of your Word and prayer.  Lord, during the famine and the harvest, may we cling to you, and you alone. Amen.

A Bit from John 4

27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”

32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”

33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

John 4:27-38

In regards to evangelism, we are not necessarily always called to reap the benefits of our labor. Yet, God calls us to share the Word with the world with the knowledge that we are doing it out of obedience not out of response of whether we are sowing or reaping.  Do we have the love and desire for God to obey His commands even if we do not see their benefits or blessings immediately?

Bonded in Strength

7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:

 8 There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
   a miserable business!

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
   two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:7-12

We are not meant to fight this life alone. Just like soldiers who go overseas or a football team who goes to play a game on the road: one man will ultimately lose the battle. Yet, with numbers, you can gain strength and confidence going into the battle that lies ahead. Let this passage challenge you to truly yearn and seek to find others in you life who love Christ and build community with them. Through this the world will never be the same and history will be shaken with the name of Christ through a true fellowship of believers sticking together and acting as one.

Carry Each Others’ Burdens

1Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:1-2

I struggle with this passage yet it is so vital to truly living as the invisible church and body of Christ. So many times we either look over the sins of our brothers and sisters in Christ or we attack them violently with harsh words, slander, and gossip. We are all one body moving and functioning as the body of Christ. May we love and care for each other even in our sin with that in mind.

Blessed through Giving and Serving

31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25:31-40

Blessed in Perseverance

7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

James 5:7-11

Enlisted Service

One of the interesting things about stressful situations is that the true character of men is revealed. This is especially the case in wartime. Men, who during training walked around the base camp like they were all that and a bag of nacho cheese Doritos, suddenly wet their pants in fear of the bullets whizzing by in all directions. Men, who hours earlier boasted of how they would be decorated from head to toe with medals and ribbons on honor, now run scared. They completely abandon their mission and their brothers of battle just to save their skin. On the flip side, there are men of valor who, once hidden, now shine out during these times of struggle. We hear of men who fell on grenades to save their fellow soldiers. We read the tales of troops going back into enemy territory to retrieve or rescue one of their own. And we hear of commanding officers standing at the forefront leading their men into the fight as opposed to shouting orders from the safety of the back lines. What is it that separates the men from the boys? The heroes from the zeros, so to speak? In a word- selflessness. Almost every single soldier who is glorified in a Hollywood movie is uplifted not because of some self-seeking goal they fulfilled or what they did to boost themselves up at the expense of others, but because of some selfless act they performed to better the lives of those around them. These men put others first and themselves last.

This is the in fact the very reason that Jesus receives the honor and glory that does. The creator of heaven and earth, the King of kings and Lord of lords gave up his throne in Heaven to come down to earth to be around His creation and serve them. He served by healing and mending broken hearts. He restored the spirits of those who were outcasts in society. And of course, He made us whole again by uniting us again with the Father. But he also met people’s physical needs. He healed different sickness. He fed the hungry. He provided spiritually AND physically for people. Jesus actually tells us that if we do not love others through service, then we have no part in him. Matthew 25:31-46 reads

31″When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34″Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37″Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40″The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
41″Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44″They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45″He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46″Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Think of the men and women of faith (that you know personally) whom you admire the most. What is it that stands out to you? Their wisdom and understanding of the scriptures may be one of your answers, but chances are that your response was ‘their heart for others’ or ‘their desire to serve in ways that others would choose to avoid.’ Spiritually this is what separates the mature in Christ from the babes, or the spiritual “men from the boys.” It is only when our heart for others overflows into our daily behavior, as we restore both the body and soul of our neighbors, that we truly become formidable soldiers in the spiritual war we are waging.
